Slow Travel Guide or directory
One of the few online travel directories that have been made in the true spirit of ‘slow travel’, if not the only one. I’d call it the definitive slow travel guide. I always turn to their online directory when planning a trip. I’ve been using them for quite a few years now and haven’t been let down so far. They have a beautiful new website, full of their ‘special places’ and slow travel inspiration. They explain that it all started 25 years ago when Alistair Sawday was a tour guide in France discovering original places to stay. I love this description: “Our carefully curated guides and website are just a slightly neater, less wine-stained version of those original notes.” That sentence is so evocative and I think a true reflection of the company.
Particularly excellent are their ‘handpicked collections’: collections of special places according to a theme or a characteristic such as ‘dog-friendly’ or ‘ethical places’ or ‘cosy boltholes’.
They cover the following regions: Britain, France, Ireland, Italy, Portugal and Spain. So if you’re planning a trip to any of those places, look no further than Sawday’s because they have done the legwork for us discovering accommodations that capture the essence of slow travel.
