MY FAVOURITE BOOKSHOP
Books are definitely a part of an analog or ‘slow’ lifestyle. I really hope that there will always be libraries and bookshops, especially like my favourite bookshop; “Mr B’s Emporium of Reading Delights”. That name alone…brilliant! They’re based in Bath, which happens to be my favourite city. I’ve been there quite a few times and I never leave without buying at least one book at Mr B’s.
Why I think you’ll like it:
The interior of the shop is lovely, with two floors filled with books. Upstairs there is even a fireplace and a reading booth for absolute quiet whilst perusing a book. They have lots of shelves with the staff members’ personal recommendations; those books are displayed with a handwritten note attached to them. You’ve got to love those personal touches. This really is an independent bookstore, with original books rather than the ones you’d expect (because they’ve got huge marketing campaigns behind them).
What to watch out for on their website:
Their website is a bit like their shop in that there is so much to discover! Events such as readings, podcasts and their wonderful book lists according to a theme with wonderfully inventive titles like ‘Smorgasbords of reading’. Because I can’t be in Bath as often as I’d like to be, I make up for it by browsing their website and pouring over their book lists, discovering new finds to add to my wish list.
Their amazingly inventive reading gifts:
Reading Spa in their bibliotherapy rooms
For my twenty-something birthday (I honestly can’t remember which birthday, I have a terrible memory for dates and numbers), I was given the best present ever (which hasn’t been surpassed as of yet): A Mr B’s Reading Year. Imagine receiving a brown paper package on your doormat every month wrapped with string with Mr B’s seal on it in red wax and to open it to discover a book handpicked for you by a staff member, with a handwritten bookmark inside. You are sent a questionnaire to fill out so that they can start their selection.
Unfortunately, I don’t have an image of the shop front (which is wonderful), but I do have some film images of Bath 🙂 I’ve also come to the conclusion that I should take more film images of books…for someone who is as mad about books as I am, I have very few images of books…!
The wonderful city of Bath.
