As the first on my list of interior brands that produce consciously, of course I mention Arte di Vita Paint & Fabrics, a line of chalk paint and lime paint with a collection of natural fabrics that match the paint colours. My mother, Alexandra, who is an interior designer created the colours and searched heaven and earth for natural fabrics, linen and hemp, that were ecologically produced in European factories and that matched her paint colours. She also searched for fabrics that were wider than average (so that you don’t need to buy so many metres), and she paid attention that the consumer price wouldn’t be too high. So if you’re looking to decorate your home in beautiful muted colours, using consciously produced paint and fabrics for an affordable price, look no further! Now, you might think this is a sales pitch but I swear it isn’t! I honestly haven’t seen colours like these anywhere else. They’re good for the environment, but also very good for both your physical and psychological wellbeing. According to Ayurveda colours have an important effect on your health. I’ve felt and seen the fabrics myself and they’re absolutely gorgeous. I sleep in a room with ‘Gustavian blue grey’ on the wall and my cupboard, and with curtains made from Arte di Vita fabric, a mix of linen and hemp in a beautiful denim blue.
I’ve been capturing my mum’s beautiful creations from the start. The images of the paint are digital, but the rest was all shot on film. The images of the fabric are from an editorial I shot of a few of her linens in a Tuscan apartment. The walls of the living room were frescoed during World War II. I thought they’d go really well with the linen fabrics.
